For mains opt for the happy valley grass-fed double burger or chipotle pork carnitas tacos.

The philosophy at the K-town vegan restaurant Hangawi is simple: the ideal diet consists of a harmonious coupling of foods, such as greens and fruit, with their yang brethren, a category that includes mainly root vegetables.  Here, even the meat lovers among us – can leave feeling not only full but satisfied. Dishes worth noting are their tofu-infused options, and entrees like organic, gluten-free Zen noodles with a panoply of mushrooms and assorted vegetables in brown sauce and fresh grilled todok strips in a gluten-free tamari soy sauce.

Dirt Candy – 86 Allen St., NY 10002

Vegetarians unite, for Amanda Cohen has created an amazing temple of garden delights with her aptly-named Dirt Candy. This attractive restaurant serves sumptuous fare with flair and panache. A small, well-curated menu takes vegetables to a new level, with beans appearing in a pageant alongside coconut-poached tofu, saffron sauce, Moroccan herbs, and sizzling rice, broccoli dogs with broccoli kraut and vinegar broccoli rabe. A full bar, counter seating, a wine list curated by sommelier Lauren Friel. Starting September 5, Dirt Candy will only offer an a la carte menu at the bar and at brunch. Diners coming for dinner will have a choice of The Vegetable Patch featuring five courses of Dirt Candy’s greatest hits, or they can take a trip to The Vegetable Garden, which is at least nine courses and changes according to the season.
