StreetXO, Mayfair’s Best Kept Secret

It’s not often that a three-Michelin starred chef opens up shop in London with little fanfare and a flurry of press. StreetXO appears to the exception. Led by Chef David Munoz, StreetXO has opened in a quiet lane in Mayfair this fall. Once in the space, StreetXO is anything but subdued.

David Munoz has been perfecting his culinary craft since his teen years when he attended culinary school in Madrid. At 23 he moved to London to continue honing in on his skill at Nobu and Hakkasan. These elite restaurants equipped him with the knowledge needed to lead his very own three Michelin starred eatery in Madrid: DiverXO. Boasting an eight-month waiting list, soon Munoz introduced the more informal, equally inventive StreetXO, also in Madrid.

Now in London, StreetXO takes a cue from European, Asian and South American culinary traditions in addition to flavours of the Middle East. The décor is inspired by London’s subversive street food scene like the enclaves found in Shoreditch, Dalston and Brixton. Patrons can choose to dine at a table or at the counter, which adds to the experience. The phalanx of punk-y chefs make up 80% of the eatery’s staff because each spends time with customers discussing the dishes. Their costumes resemble straight jackets based on the idea that their cooking is downright crazy.

The menu itself lists 18 inventive small plates designed to share tapas-style. Three to four are recommended per person for dinner. “Le Pedroche” croquettes come highly recommended. Featuring soft sheep’s cheese covered in a fried crust, topped with cured tuna and kimchi, they are the perfect balance of flavours.
