1. Le Château de Bel Ombre, Mauritius

For an authentic Mauritian experience in a romantic setting, this elegant, candlelit restaurant with silver service is one of the island’s best. It is a beautifully restored colonial mansion dating back to the 1800s, with a spiral staircase, set among the hills and sugar fields of Domaine de Bel Ombre – the source of 90 per cent of the ingredients used in the kitchen. Cuisine is à la carte fusion food. Opt for a table on the terrace and dine al-fresco.

2. La Table Du Château, Mauritius

La Table du Château is a refined and contemporary restaurant at the heart of the Labourdonnais estate. With tradition as a muse, Chef Fabio de Poli has devised a creative and constantly evolving menu inspired by the fruit and vegetables from the Domaine’s orchards. Inspired by traditional family recipes and drawing upon a rich variety of local produce, La Table du Château’s menu reflects a cuisine brimming with local flavours. Think pink duck breast glazed with honey and orange and catch of the day glazed with maple syrpus with sauted noodles and buttered herbs. Dessert is Vodka and lemon sorbet. The 7 hour cooked lamb shank is famously good.

3. Saffron Restaurant, Seychelles 

The Saffron Restaurant is located in the fantastic Banyan Tree Resort on Mahe. It’s the hotel’s signature restaurant featuring Thai cuisine. Their dishes have won several awards and are cooked using a wide variety of traditional Thai techniques. The restaurant itself is stunning, with a true colonial plantation house feel. Guests from outside the hotel should phone and book in advance. The fare is exceptional – highlights include: the seafood glass noodle salad, red curry duck with lychees, and steamed red snapper in a chilli lime sauce.

4. La Scala, Seychelles

An old favourite of visitors and locals alike, La Scala offers the best Italian tradition under the stars in the Seychelles – it is exceptionally romantic. The restaurant specialises in quality homemade pasta and good seafood amid the low-lit ambience on the breezy terrace overlooking the sea. The tiramisu will finish you off sweetly. It’s at the end of the coast road near Danzil.

5. La Plaine St. André – La Grande Maison, Seychelles

Arguably the best fine-dining restaurant in the entire archipelago, La Grande Maison is located in the historic La Plaine St. André, the site of one of southern Mahé’s grand old plantation houses dating back to 1792. It has recently undergone a comprehensive refurbishment, restoring it to its former glory amid lush floral gardens. At the restaurant you will find traditional food as well as their own contemporary twists on Creole food, under the inspired guidance of chef Christelle Verheyden, who makes extensive use of local produce. This place is one for discerning food lovers.
